Understanding Book Categories on Amazon KDP

July 15, 2019 By Rachel Harrison-Sund

You’re uploading your very first book on KDP, armed with the categories you’re hoping to rank for. You get to the category selection section and begin scrolling through the options.

At the end of the list, you’re left confused. Why are the categories on the back end completely different than the ones in the actual Amazon store?

Today I’ll be explaining the difference between the two seemingly disparate groups of categories:

  • BISAC Categories
  • Amazon Browse Categories

I’ll also be discussing how to choose your categories, and a juicy little secret that many self-publishers don’t know about—that could dramatically increase your book’s visibility in the Amazon store.

Enjoy!

This video was SO helpful Rachel! I had no idea you can add to those categories. One question- after you submit your request and they reply saying they’ve added your books to the categories you want, is there any way to confirm that they actually added them?

    Thanks!

Hi Melody; you’re very welcome! Check out this video from self-publisher extraordinaire, Dave Chesson, to see which categories your book has actually been placed in. Lots of other great info on his blog, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=74&v=Z0H3zaDbFkk
