10 High-Leverage Millionaire Habits

Before I share these 10 millionaire habits, I want to add a disclaimer: these habits aren’t groundbreaking secrets. In fact, I would bet money that millions of people are familiar with these success habits and probably even practice a few of them here and there.

The thing about these habits and daily routines is that successful people make them a priority in their lives. They practice them regularly, which leads to long-term success. In the words of Aristotle:

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit.

With that said, let’s dive into the 10 millionaire habits.

1. Millionaires Prioritize Their Health

Millionaires make their health a priority because they know that by optimizing their physical body as well as their mind they’ll be well-equipped to put in the hard work necessary to achieve their most challenging goals.

This means eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, drinking less alcohol, and cultivating a healthy mind through practices such as meditation, journaling, or speaking to therapists or coaches.

2. Millionaires Surround Themselves With the Right People

Successful people are very intentional about who they spend time with and tend to surround themselves with those who possess a positive mental outlook on life. They minimize time spent with negative, fixed-mindset, or emotionally draining people.

They also make it a point to spend time with people who are more successful than they are so that they can benefit from the advice and mentorship of those who have gone before them.

In this day and age, when it may be difficult to meet up in person, there are a TON of opportunities to join online communities and masterminds. Look for groups that will offer you a chance to learn, but where you can add your own value to help others grow as well.

3. Millionaires Are Always Learning

Successful people are lifelong learners. They demonstrate an eagerness to learn new things and explore a broad range of topics.

They take the time to read about business- or self development-related topics for at least 30 minutes a day. Many successful people also read biographies of other successful individuals to give them a better understanding of their chosen field and the accomplishments of others.

They understand that knowledge can help them make better, more informed decisions, take calculated risks, and increase their chances of success.

4. Millionaires Protect Their Time and Energy

Millionaires are incredibly intentional when it comes to managing their time and energy. They take a proactive, methodical approach to planning their months, weeks, and days, with the intention of making the most out of every moment. They are very selective in deciding what they will devote their attention to, and they are willing to let go of anything that does not directly contribute to their goals.

Additionally, they’ve mastered the art of saying “no.” They understand that to be successful they need to be more judicious in the commitments they make and the tasks they undertake, so saying “no” is often the wiser decision. This allows them to make room in their lives for the things that really matter and avoid the distractions that can hold them back.

5. Millionaires Help Others Succeed

Wealthy people often have negative stereotypes attached to them. A common one is that people claiming to be “self-made millionaires” must have gained their wealth at the expense of someone else, elbowing people out of the way and stepping over people’s grandmothers (or maybe even their own!) to become rich.

The reality is that most millionaires love to help others succeed and will gladly make the time or use their influence to help someone they see is working hard and is committed to succeeding.

6. Millionaires Make Time to Think

This habit is easy to overlook, as it’s a subtle, internal practice—financially successful people tend to carve out time each day just to think and reflect.

This means completely unplugging for 15 to 30 minutes, perhaps sitting in silence, journaling, or going for a walk. I personally like to spend 15 to 20 minutes sitting in silence at the end of the workday, plus a couple hours on Fridays thinking and reflecting. Bill Gates famously takes a week off at a time to do nothing but read and think.

7. Millionaires Actively Work on Cultivating a Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset means believing that you can learn and improve, even if you don’t have natural talent in a particular area. It also means being open to feedback and trying new things.

Millionaires cultivate a growth mindset by:

  • being optimistic
  • having an abundance mentality
  • believing they can learn to do anything they want
  • welcoming challenges
  • viewing negative feedback as constructive
  • being resilient
  • always looking at failures as an opportunity to grow
  • constantly thinking about what they need to work on and who they need to become to get to that next level of wealth and success

8. Millionaires Take Exquisite Care of Their Money

Millionaires have a deeply intimate knowledge of their finances and track them with care. They live below their means and are uninterested in keeping up with the Joneses.

They save a lot of their income, invest, automate both their savings and investments, and review their net worth often, usually quarterly or monthly.

According to a recent study by the IRS, financially successful people generally have, on average, 7 different streams of income, including:

  • rental income (from real estate)
  • earned income (from their job)
  • royalties (from things like book sales)
  • dividends (investment income)
  • capital gains (income from the sale of their investments)
  • interest income

You’ll notice that most of these income streams are passive. For more about what passive income is (and is not) check out, The Top 5 Online Passive Income Models.

9. Millionaires Plan For the Future

Millionaires possess drive and ambition that set them apart from the rest. They are highly future-minded and are able to envision, with a great degree of clarity and detail, what their future life will look like in the next 5 to 10 years.

They don’t just dream big; they believe that their big dreams are achievable, and then go about creating highly detailed action plans for making those dreams a reality. They have a powerful sense of purpose and are willing to put in the hard work necessary to get to where they want to go.

10. Millionaires Follow Through

Millionaires are not just dreamers; they are doers and implementers. They take action and make their goals a reality. They break down their goals into manageable action steps and schedule them in their calendars for timely implementation. They review their progress regularly and adjust their strategies as needed.

No matter the challenges they face or the failures they experience, millionaires persevere until they reach the finish line.
